Our Programs – The Shirley Proctor Puller Foundation

Our Programs: Empowering Scholars to Shine

We commit to elevating every scholar by giving them the tools to write their own success story. Each story has critical skills that must be mastered such as reading and math fluency. Each journey has important transitions and milestones that must be navigated with an eye toward high school graduation, post-secondary options, and successful careers. Importantly, each journey requires self-discovery to strengthen confidence and self-love, enabling the scholar’s genius to shine brightly.
Every day, we work to inspire a love of learning in our scholars as well as high expectations for their own success. Our early focus is on foundational skills. As those skills are strengthened, we focus more on life skills and careers. Scholars learn to connect their achievements to their own hard work as they prepare to pursue fulfilling, life-sustaining careers. The academic curriculum is wrapped in FUN, hands on experiences that expand student boundaries and there is attention to mental health throughout our programming.

Our Approach

SPPF’s program is innovative in its focus on academics, individualized learning plans, and measurable improvement in student outcomes. Our programs utilize 1) certified teachers 2) research-based curriculum, 3) a responsive process of assessment, goal setting, and improvement, and 4) community resources to extend our capabilities and provide services for families.

Our Programming Availability: 2 Sessions Throughout the Year

Our Afterschool Session

Runs for ten months, starting one week after Pinellas County Schools and ending the same week PCS does. We are closed for all PCS holidays and in-service days. For parents who request it, we transport students from community schools to our sites.

We provide snacks and homework support for students upon arrival at the site. Our goal is to have 90 minutes of solid instruction time (4:15 to 5:45) Monday through Thursday. We therefore ask that parents NOT arrive for pickup any earlier than 5:45 pm. On Fridays, students participate in health and wellness activities including Mindful Movement, group counseling sessions, book clubs and more.

Our Summer Session

Runs for eight weeks during June and July, from 7:00 am to 6:00 pm to accommodate parent work schedules. We provide breakfast, lunch, and two snacks each day. The program is a balance of academics and extracurricular activities. Four days per week our M.A.S.T.R. Kids® scholars engage in 3 hours of Reading, Math and STEAM classes including 1:1 sessions and tutoring as needed. The rest of the day is filled with extracurricular activities including swimming, tennis, dance, mindful movement, chorus, book club, STEM club, art and outdoor play. Our High School M.A.S.T.R. Plan students engage in hands-on career exploration and college planning during the summer session.

It’s a very full schedule! One day each week is reserved for field trips to local venues like Zoo Tampa, MOSI, Great Explorations, SkateWorld and museums, to broaden the exposure of our scholars and promote continuous – and FUN – learning.
