At SPPF, we advocate for our scholars and families consistently. To us, they are extended family. SPPF leadership and staff have a strong connection to this community as 90% of us currently live and/or grew up here.
A significant majority of the scholars and families we serve are Black or Mixed Race. Decades of research reveal the impact and protective function that positive racial identity and self-esteem have on the academic success of Black youth. Studies also link students’ awareness of ongoing racial disparities to negative behavioral adjustment and lowered academic achievement (https://psycnet.apa.org/doiLanding?doi=10.1037%2F0012-1649.44.3.637). SPPF works to expand students’ sense of positive racial identity and self-esteem by creating an environment where their whole being is celebrated. From the moment you enter the space, black role models are clearly present on the walls, in the classrooms, and throughout the space. The use of culturally relevant learning materials, along with culturally empathetic teachers, role models, and community partners enhance the safe and protective learning space we provide for our scholars. Parents often tell us they feel their children are “safe” and “cared for” at our sites which leads to trust.
