As our students returned to school with the pandemic still raging in our community, we took a moment to remind ourselves of our role. We ground our students by providing a loving community that celebrates a history which places them at its center. We prepare our students by setting high expectations and helping them develop the educational tools to exceed them!
Working with Antonio Brown, a local Barber, we helped build reading corners for 12 local barbers who are reading with young clients.
In STEAM Class students combined imagination and science to create superheroes. They designed costumes and logos. They discussed the science that they could use to create super-powers like “seeing through things”, flight, teleportation, “lightning power” and “Super Infinity packing – pack things fast so won’t be late for school and you pack as much as you want – Unlimited space!”
Many elders are suffering from increased depression and dementia due to isolation during COVID-19.
There is a clear national perspective suggesting that the families in communities like South St. Pete will be disproportionately impacted by COVID-19 given the economic demographics. Our community is made of heroic parents and resourceful students. Most are employed but with limited assets and income. We strive to empower families by helping them sort through the barrage of messaging to find relevant services to stay afloat in this time of uncertainty.
